LeClair Ryan, a Virginia-based firm with over 150 attorneys, is known for the depth and breadth of its specialized litigation practice teams. Each team is comprised of individuals who have extensive experience in advising clients with respect to the substantive law of the practice area. And unlike those firms who are enthusiastic about litigating cases in the early stages, but are reluctant to take a tough case to trial, LeClair Ryan has trial attorneys with a truly extraordinary record of success.
Complex Commercial Litigation: This team handles lawsuits arising from the interaction among businesses, including antitrust claims, trademark, patent and copyright disputes, fraud, conspiracy and defamation actions, breach of contract claims, shareholder disputes, actions addressing corporate control and dissolution, and claims relating to misappropriation of trade secrets, tortious interference, and unfair competition.
Products Liability & Mass Tort Practice: Attorneys on this team have served as national coordinating counsel, or national liaison counsel, in virtually every major mass tort litigation consolidated in the federal courts over the past seven years, including the cases arising from breast implants, pedicle screws, diet drugs (Fen/Phen Redux), and Latex gloves.
Securities Litigation: Our dedicated Securities Litigation and Regulatory Practice team represents a wide range of clients in the financial services industry, as well as officers and directors of public and private companies, shareholders and consumers, handling securities litigation as well as representing entities and individuals in connection with civil and criminal investigations and regulatory enforcement proceedings. Staffed with more than a dozen attorneys with decades of experience, the team includes four partners with extensive SEC experience. James Murphy, one of the firm’s Network representatives and a frequent speaker at Network programs, co-chairs this team.
Medical malpractice defense: This team has achieved a national reputation and practice as a result of its extraordinarily aggressive and successful defense in medical malpractice cases. Over the last 6 years, this team has tried 80 cases to verdicts, winning defense verdicts in 74. When Virginia Lawyers Weekly reported the Top 10 Defense Verdicts for 2003, team members won seven of them. Rod Adams, who has taken over 50 med mal cases to trial, is the firm’s chair of the Medical Malpractice and Healthcare Law group.
Employment & Labor: This team has a wealth of experience in all aspects of labor and employment law. We defend employers throughout the nation in class and individual employment discrimination actions, statutory wage claims, and a host of other statutory, contract and tort claims. We have considerable experience in the design and enforcement of mandatory arbitration programs. Charlie Meyer chairs the Labor & Employment Group.
Bankruptcy & Creditors’ Rights: This uniquely experienced and highly responsive team focuses its practice on business reorganizations, chapter 11 practice, out-of-court restructurings, bankruptcy preference and fraudulent conveyance claims, creditors’ rights litigation, as well as other aspects of bankruptcy and creditors’ rights. With more than a dozen attorneys devoted exclusively to this practice area, we have one of the largest practice groups of its kind on the East Coast.
In addition, we have exceptionally strong teams devoted to Appellate practice, Construction litigation, Environmental litigation, and Intellectual Property litigation. In addition to the litigation practices described above, the firm provides services in administrative and legislative proceedings, business succession, commercial lending, compensation and benefits, corporate and securities matters, energy and public utility law, estate planning, financial institutions, healthcare, immigration, land use and zoning, mergers and acquisitions, real estate, secured transactions, sports, taxation, tax-exempt finance, telecommunications and venture capital.
